Project Summary
The Retrofit for Lets project aimed to provide energy efficiency advice and recommendations to private rented sector landlords.
This was a Local Energy Advice Demonstrator project, funded by The North West Net Zero Hub and The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.
The advice service operated across Warrington, Cheshire surrounding areas, with 180 landlords provided with advice in upgrading the energy efficiency of their domestic properties.
Landlords were provided with an initial consultation, to understand how efficient their properties currently were. If necessary, landlords would then be offered with an in person Retrofit Assessment, provided with detailed reports on the energy efficiency of their property and specific upgrade recommendations around how to increase EPC to C, in line with future legislation.

Sooner or later, all homes must achieve an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of ‘C’ or above to keep the UK on track to reach net zero by 2050. 16 million homes will need upgrade work in England alone.
The 20% of homes built before 1919 and further 34% built before 1964 pose the most difficult and expensive challenges. For now, the UK Government has held back on proposed changes to raise Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES) for new and existing tenancies. But this is an obvious lever that can be pulled.
Many tenants are struggling with high energy costs to heat poorly performing homes placing increasing pressure on rent affordability.
